Why is Sustainability Important

Here at Jack and Jill, we implement a sustainability plan to involve the children in the process of learning about nature, the environment, animals and the planet.

Sustainability can be defined as a way to be more resourceful with nature and teaches children about being mindful of the environment. If it is something that should last forever, it is something that we should support and sustain. Helping them understand more about the environment encourages them to be involved in the process of sustainability.

The building is designed with high ceilings and large floor to ceiling windows to provide natural light. Lighting is used minimally throughout the day as each room provides plenty of natural light and screen doors are installed in each room to regulate temperatures and limit the use of the air condition systems.

Sustainability in early childhood education is an important part of the curriculum, creating natural environments and providing natural materials is one way for sustainability to occur.

Sustainability is “environment education” is learning about the environment and how natural systems function. It’s everything that we need for our survival and wellbeing relating directly to our natural environment.

Here at Jack and Jill we work alongside Hornsby Shire Council and participate in the Early Childhood Sustainability Program.
